Thursday, Sept. 09, 2004 - 2:19 p.m. Taiwan Costs..... Photos..... Q&A Hhmmmmmmmmmm. Dont think I can top that last post. Haha. I am just a bit too proud of that puppy. I love it when non-bitter moments come spewing out of me. ahhhhhh. I just spent a couple of hours transfering the scooter over to my co-worker. Hes going to then transfer it over to the new girl when she gets here. It only took about an hour and a half, and only that long cause the inspection office was closed from noon to 1pm. We did find it funny that the sign at the inspection office said, "NO REST AT NOON." We agreed that it meant to say TEST not REST. Ah, a good laugh! It always happens to me that I meet the most fun and interesting people before I leave a place. About a month ago I met K., a few weeks ago V. And between them and the few local friends I have made over the past 10 months (um, 3!), my cell has been going off this week like never before (in Taiwan, at least). I almost dont know what to do with myself! haha. I am usually more reclusive than I am being now, but since I am in a non-friendly hostel and there is someone in my room that goes to sleep early (before 2 am), I cant go home and read or watch TV. So, I have to go out and play. Oh, life is rough! I had an oral test during one of my regular classes last night. Some of the girls were really giggly and stuff. I am glad that they have relaxed so much around me cause I think they get so nervous speaking English. I know I get nervous speaking any other language! I wanted so much to share something fun with a few of them before I left, but their vocabulary is so limited, its hard as hell. And then I looked down at the bracelet that K. got me a few weeks ago. It is a purple plastic bracelet with the letters NMG on it. It stands for Naughty Monkey Girl. That is jokingly what we call ourselves. I have written before about calling someone a naughty monkey being common here, esp among kids. So we just decided (over some wine) one night that we were going to be NMG. Not one kid has asked me what the letters are for since I started wearing it. Which is weird, cause they are all over me when something is different. They even laugh uncontrollably when they see me out of my green work t-shirt. So when I saw the bracelet last night I thought I would let a few of the kids in on the joke. BUT it didnt go over well at all. They didnt get it. I think cause they are not used to initials. Their native language is so structurally different than English that having three English letters "mean" something just didnt compute. I tried three of my smartest kids and not one of them got it. I know they would laugh if I told them I was a naughty monkey girl, have called them and me and everyone in sight a naughty monkey over and over for 10 months now. Bummer! I really wanted them to feel special. Guess they will have to settle for my hugs, weird expressions and smiles! Sigh. |
